Meet St. Padre Pio: Mystic, Confessor, and Witness to Christ’s Suffering
St. Padre Pio is remembered for his deep holiness, spiritual gifts, and tireless ministry as a confessor. Born Francesco Forgione in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy, he entered the Capuchin friars as a young man and was known for his intense prayer life, humility, and charity.
Padre Pio bore the stigmata—the wounds of Christ—for most of his life, and he spent countless hours hearing confessions, offering spiritual direction, and interceding for the suffering. Canonized in 2002, he is revered around the world as a patron saint of healing, suffering, and those seeking reconciliation with God. His feast day is celebrated on September 23.
