Meet St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: Pioneer of Catholic Education & Model of Faithful Motherhood
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is remembered as a courageous convert, devoted mother, and founder of the first free Catholic school in the United States. Born in 1774 in New York City, she was raised in a prominent Episcopalian family before embracing Catholicism after the death of her husband.
As a widow and mother of five, she went on to establish the Sisters of Charity and laid the foundation for the Catholic school system in the United States. Canonized in 1975, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is the first native-born American saint and is honored as the patron saint of Catholic schools, widows, and those in religious education. Her feast day is celebrated on January 4.
